A lot of it is nostalgia goggles. We want the newer games to capture that euphoric feeling we got when we first played No Mercy or the like. Problem is, when you're an adult your brain doesn't respond the same way, so you don't form the same attachments. That can lead to a lot of frustration when new stuff fails to capture that feeling and a tendency to romanticize the past when things were just better.man. As an adult you see things for more of what they are (ie- flaws you would have overlooked as a kid now become apparent). I played it growing up so I do have a soft spot for it.
It certainly was a high water mark for it's time and I don't want to diminish that. That said, I played an emulator little over a year ago and found the gameplay to be robotic, clunky and after a few matches I decided I'd had my fill. Time marches on.
I find it all comes down to keeping things in perspective. The newer games are certainly not perfect, but they are also 1000 times more complicated than an N64 game could have ever been. More complexity means more glitches and bugs. Your 100+ playable characters, intricate created wrestlers, custom entrances and videos and even the depth of the moves you can select. Those were all radical sci-fi innovations I could only dream of as a kid while watching blocky, vaguely humanoid shapes lumber around a ring doing movements that kind of resembled wrestling moves. The good news is, most people eventually settle into this realization and learn to appreciate things for what they are. Or they become bitter, grumbling, wrecks constantly complaining that they don't make good music, movies, tv, videogames, wrestling, etc anymore and everything was objectively better back in their day.it wasn't.
. I wished they had stayed with the original developers and publishers because I felt they were on their way to making the greatest wrestling game ever and then 2k happened, 2k14 was good to cause I think the original developers worked on that one and it was a 2k game only in name, but 2k has the worst developers ever, I wish they would go back and watch old wrestling matches and play the old game before making 2k20 cause I’m sure 2k19 may not live up to expectations but I hope I’m wrong.
